Not My Intention for NJFM

Warning: Minor political rant!

This is not what I had in mind when I chose the title  “No Job for Mom” for this blog.

Below is a snippet of an article that appeared yesterday on the Emirates 24/7 News website. It doesn’t need much of an introduction:

Mayor no job for mom: Berlusconi

Sexism row in Italy over comments of three-time former premier

Published Tuesday, March 15, 2016

Silvio Berlusconi sparked fury on Tuesday by claiming that being mayor of Rome was ‘no job for a mother’ while backing a male candidate who advised a pregnant rival to stick to breastfeeding.

The three-time former premier claimed the task of cleaning up the scandal-hit capital would be too much for far right candidate Giorgia Meloni, who is due to give birth soon after the election in May or June.

“A mother cannot dedicate herself to a terrible job and running Rome today is terrible job which will require 14 hours a day in the office,” Berlusconi said.

My Opinion:Strong Moms

I hate politics because all too often real causes get buried in the less than above-board political shenanigans. Having said that, I’ll respond to Mr. Berlusconi by listing the names of a few moms that have tackled much more than what he gives us credit for:

  • Cleopatra
  • Corazon Aquino
  • Benazir Bhutto
  • Indira Gandhi
  • Golda Meir
  • Michelle Obama
  • Pritbha Patil
  • Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti
  • Eleanor Roosevelt
  • Nawal El Saadawi

I’ve plucked a few names from a very, very large pool of leader moms. We moms can do whatever we set our minds to do!

End of political rant.

Rant on, my friend. And please, allow me to join you.
I read the entire article. I like that you highlighted a list of resourceful moms and as you said there are so many more. Working and retired moms everywhere, including you and I, would gladly take Berlusconi to task for such foolish remarks. His imprudent comment about Meloni implies that a woman is incapable of handling a job outside her home and being a proficient mother simultaneously. It leads me to compare him to a certain negative news generating Republican candidate for president, whose name I won’t let dirty my mouth or my keyboard. But I have digressed. Back on track. I imagine that Berlusconi’s snipe at Meloni reverberates to all conscientious working mothers. He should take note: According to the US Conference of Mayors, “As of June 2015, of the 1,393 mayors of U.S. cities with populations over 30,000, 256, or 18.4%, were women.” Many of them mothers, who aptly handle(d) both jobs very well, thank you.

Loretta, I had to laugh out loud when I read the part about the “news generating Republican candidate…” 🙂

Of course we Moms rock. It is not lightly said that the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world! 🙂 I remember, long ago, how freaked out I would get about “vidz” being used in all sorts of irrelevant contexts, Felicia. Of course I was being unreasonable – simply because I was used to being called Vidz. Funny internet!
