November Traffic Down 17%

November 2011 Traffic DropIt’s the end of the month and time for me to look at what I did during the month and how I can improve on things going forward.

In reviewing my numbers I see that my overall traffic is down. I did a quick analysis of my top 6 sites and have found an average decrease in page views of 15% and a 17% decrease in visitors.

The lower traffic could be a result of the Panda algorithm change or it could be the result of old content. I haven’t spent much time posting new content on my sites this month. As a matter of fact, I’ve added 19 new pieces of content to my sites. 15 of the new pieces of content were posts here on NJFM, and I’ve shared in the past that NJFM is not my road to riches (far from it).

I’ve been spending my time working on projects that will help to shield me and my income from Panda fluctuations and other search engine modifications.

Traffic lite for NovemberEffects of Less Traffic

Now that I’ve analyzed the lack of traffic and the cause thereof, it’s time for me to look at the income from my top 6 sites to see if the income trended accordingly.

Much to my surprise, the income didn’t follow the traffic. The income from my top 6 online properties is up 14% over last month’s. To what do I attribute this? Well, I believe a large portion can be attributed to adding the authorized sites to my AdSense account.

The rest I’ve got to attribute to changing some of the AdSense ad blocks. The first modification (authorized sites) took a total of 5 minutes or less to implement. The ad block changes took a little longer because I had to change each site. In total, it took a couple of hours to implement.

Sharpening the SwordSharpen the Sword

I’m reading several books by Dr. Steven R. Covey. If you have time, I strongly suggest you pick up his book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I’ve got to warn you, this book is not mental candy. It will cause you to think, reflect and change.

In his books he talks about sharpening the sword, which means retooling, sharpening your skills, learning new tools and taking care of the items/tools used on your journey to success.

Although it is my goal to reduce my reliance on Google and Google AdSense, it is a tool in my online writing arsenal. While I’m creating new venues and working on new projects, it is to my advantage to sharpen my AdSense tool to make it work better for me. I truly believe that if it were not for the sharpening of the sword, November would have been much worse. Instead, it’s my best month for online residual earnings.

Nice to hear that income is up despite the traffic decrease. You’re obviously going in the right direction!

Thanks for the reminder about 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I feel like I’m practicing the habits of the highly ineffective lately, so I think I’ll dust off my copy and refresh my memory:)

Habits of the highly ineffective. LOL! It’s amazing the amount of motivation we have on our bookshelves. It’s just a matter of dusting them off and reading them. 🙂

Congrats on the increased income despite the decrease in traffic. I suspect that the impact will be even better once traffic returns to normal levels.

Thanks. The big question is: What is normal?

With Pandas and algorithm changes, maybe this is the new normal level. Only time will tell.

    Hi Felicia,

I really enjoy this article and would suggest that it indicates that you are starting to reach far more targeted traffic than in the past.

You obviously learning from your stats and refining results which is really what Internet marketing is all about, well done!

    Kind regards

I like this article because it starts with a negative headline and ends with a positive message. Everything in life is positive if you examine it properly. Everything.

    There is only good.

I love Covey’s Seven habits books — his one for families has been a wonderful tool for us.

I’ve never seen a warning about my ads appearing on non-authorized sites within my Adsense; I think I’ve always added them before placing ads. But I will dig deeper to find out. Thanks for the tip!

I wish I had read Covey’s books earlier. Better late than never. 🙂
