Peek-A-Boo, I’m back (for now)

I woke up this morning to find that my site was nowhere to be found. Imagine my shock when I typed in my URL and found a blank white page. I’ve got to say, a white page is a nice place to start, but since I’ve been blogging here for a couple of years, a blank page isn’t too good.

Submit a Ticket

I’m working with Hostgator to find out why this happened. So, if you come to visit NJFM and it’s not there, don’t panic (as I did). It’s all gonna work out in the long run. I really miss the days of actually placing a phone call and getting a knowledgeable person on the other end. Now, I’ve got to submit a ticket and wait for someone to get back to me.

Plenty to Do

In the meanwhile, while my site and hosting company are playing Peek-a-Boo, I’m going out to do some yard work. The recent storms have wreaked havoc on our very, very, very old trees. We have huge limbs and branches everywhere. So, for a change, I’m leaving the laptop inside and I’m going out to get a workout. While my hubby is at work, I might even get a chance to play with the chain saw (he thinks I can’t handle it).

Hopefully, when I come back my site will be back to stay. In the meanwhile, I’m going to play in the real world today. With any luck, I’ll have all of my limbs when I return.

    I was catching up on my reading at about 1 AM your time. When I visited your site, all the posts were there, but the widgets with Recent Comments, etc. didn’t load. I don’t know if that helps, but it could be a plug in issue. They do have a tendency to bump into each other along with the walls and the furniture, etc. :).

    I found a WordPress discussion thread that indicates you’re not alone and offers some helpful ideas:

    I have Hostgator and have no complaint, but it is possible that they were migrating a server or something and just hit a glitch. I have done a lot of techie stuff in my life and we have all mastered the puzzled look and “hmmmm” expression when someone has a problem we know that we might have caused with a recent change :). Email responses don’t even require much in the way of acting skills…

    I came across your blog yesterday and learned so much about the different content mills that are out there. I’m a longtime freelance writer who is now turning to the idea of trying them out.     I saw the white page also and wondered. Figured it was just maintenance or some other glitch.

    What is this little red text line under this text enter box that says “bad juju just happened…” ???

      Not sure which red text line you’re seeing. I’m not seeing it on this end. Could you give me a little more detail?

    I don’t see it so maybe it was just a brief problem, but I think the “bad juju” thing is a CommentLuv server error.

      Grandma, I did a quick search on that issue and found this info: http://digitivity.org/877/feed-errors-in-commentluv-getting-unbanned

      It seems that it’s related to the IP address and web feed of the person trying to leave the comment. It sounds like CommentLuv is trying to list your last blog post and can’t find the RSS feed. This might be a moot point since your “blog” is actually a static website.

    If this helps, as I look at your blog right now it looks like everything is present and in place, with the exception of some empty spaces in the bottom half of the right-hand side of the page. The Subscribe to the Newsletter box, OIO box and Suite101 widget are there, but they’re surrounded by a lot of white space.

      Thanks, Fujoshicat.

      The white space is probably my doing. I’ve been looking at my WordPress template more closely since this happened and realize that it’s really a mess. I took a look at my About page and realized that I had not changed it since I started the site 2 years ago.

      One of the things on my “To Do” list this year is to change the theme. I think it has now become more of a priority. So, I’m in the process of changing the theme and hopefully making the site easier to navigate and more visually balanced.

    Now there is no way to cancel the account or even contact them! How ignorant to have a website with no way to contact. I did find an email of admin@comluv.com on a Twitter post.

    Okay here is what Andy Bailey, the owner of comluv.com tells me to do.
    “If you dont want commentluv to do anything when you comment, uncheck the box next to the badge and nothing will happen.”

    He’s right, I uncheckd the box and nothing happened…that red comment is still there!

      Grandma, I’m sorry to hear CommentLuv is giving you such a problem. I just thought your last comment was hysterical. 🙂

      Gotta love the internet and the frustrations it brings. Hope no one else is having CommentLuv issues.

      If Andy Bailey can’t come up with a solution, we’re in trouble. 🙂

    Felicia, I’m glad it seems to be back. I hope you’ll post about what happened more specifically. I am thinking of following your recommendation and signing up for Host Gator and I’d like to know how they handled this, if it was their fault, etc. Thanks!

    Beelissa, I just realized I didn’t answer your question (sorry).

    I’m not exactly sure what the problem was. I believe it was a combination of my old WordPress theme, some incompatible plugins and the fact that HostGator updated their servers.

    Things are a lot better now and I would recommend signing up with Host Gator. Their customer service is very responsive.
