Is Today.com Shooting Themselves in the Foot?

Thanks to one of my readers (yes I’m referring to you Sher); I happened upon Hospitalera’s Blog.

Apparently Hospitalera had a pretty successful blog over at Today.com.  All appeared to be going great when one day she received an email from Today stating that they were changing her payment rate.  Shortly thereafter, she received another email informing her that Today Shoots Self in Foot (image by Jose Hermida)they were closing out her account.

I don’t understand what and why because I had not previously followed Hospitalera’s Today blog.  According to her post her blog was in the “Top 100 and most of the time even in the Top 50 of their blog statistics.”

In the past I had recommended Today.com as a way to earn money blogging, but I think after my experience and Hospitalera’s experience and the experience of other unhappy Today.com bloggers, I’m going to have to rescind my endorsement of using Today.com as one of the online freelance writing tools.

Check out Hospitalara’s blog for more info.  Oh, and while you’re at it, visit Sher’s blog.  If I hadn’t stopped by the Czech Off the Beaten Path blog, I wouldn’t have found Hospitalera (I love my early morning internet wanderings).

I got the payment change e-mail a few days ago. I wrote them back and told them their reputation is declining because of this and some people put a lot of time into their blog. They pretty much said, yea that’s nice, sorry. I am still on the fence because I do make a little $$ there. Is there any other site that is similar that you can make $$ by blogging W/Out ads?

It’s official. The day after I made this post to my blog I received the following email:

You have not consistently posted since becoming a VIP member.
We only retain VIP members who consistently post as this benefits
both the VIP member and our program.

As a result of this inactivity we have disabled your VIP account.

Thank you for trying out our program.

    Best Regards,
    The Today.com Team”

Hey…wait a minute. They get to keep the 60 cents or so I earned since being demoted to being paid on a page view basis only? 😀

Oh well, I knew it was coming. Guess I’ll officially delete their column from my earnings spreadsheet.

Julie, off the top of my head I can’t think of any that use a similar format, but if I come across one, I’ll let you know.

ah…I wasn’t aware that they had more versions of their “don’t let the door hit you on the way out” email

most of us exiles seemed to get the “We understand you are unhappy” version…

I totally agree that today.com is shooting themselves in the foot, I had the same thing happen to me. They changed how they were going to pay me and they lost me because of it.
