Put on Blinders and Keep on Writing

Sometimes you have to put on blinders to become and remain successful. Learn to selectively ignore what people, TV, radio and the newspapers are telling you.

The World’s Reality

All you need to do is turn on a TV a look at the front page of the newspaper to know that these are seriously challenging economic times. The price of oil, gas, food, clothes, etc is rising. Unfortunately, salaries are not rising accordingly (for those folks who still have jobs). We’re all feeling the financial pinch.

My Reality

Having acknowledged the current economic climate, I cannot consistently focus on the failing economy. I need to put as much effort as I can into writing, blogging, earning money and increasing my revenue. If I Rising Gas Priceskeep listening to the news, I would eventually lose all hope and throw my hands up in the air in despair. However, I’ve made it a habit to gain my focus from looking at where I want to be, rather than where I am.

Put on Blinders

According to the media, my earnings should not be increasing year after year. When I look at my earnings and see that as of September 23, 2008, I’ve earned 53% more than I earned last year, I realize that if I allowed the media hysteria to direct my actions, I would stop doing what I’m doing and watch my earnings decline.

This year, my residual (passive) income alone is well on the way to surpassing my entire last year’s earnings. That means that residually, I’ll earn more this year than I earned both residually and actively last year. Is that a step in the right direction? Yes it is. Is it difficult to do? No, if I can do it, anyone can.

Regain Your Focus

I’m not sharing this information to look for a pat on the back. I’m sharing this information to help you to regain focus. Turn off the news, get to the computer and start writing. Don’t get caught up in the massRising Salary financial hysteria. Do something about it.

Don’t get me wrong, I do feel the financial pinch and I understand that we are living under financially challenging conditions. However, the best way to combat the rising prices is to consistently increase your income one day at a time.

Lessons Learned:

  1. Watch what you’re focusing on. Focus on the resolution and not the problem.
  2. Anything is possible with constant and persistent effort.
  3. There is money to be made on the Internet.

I stumbled upon this site and am I ever glad I did! They say that you will get what you need when you need it and I guess this just proves how true it is. I am a newbie to blogging and have been on a journey to find work from home options. I really needed this encouragement. Thank you.

I see this all the time at my F/T job for a brokerage firm. Clients see on CNN that stocks are going to drop, and they all call in to sell before the market opens. It is creating this mass hysteria, self-fulfilling prophecy that the average person doesn’t realize he or she is making happen. It makes perfect sense that your income would grow; if you reacted to the hysteria, dropped your prices and took any old gigs you would see your income fall. Don’t react, stay on course, and we’ll all get through this. The only people who should be really worried are those already enjoying retirement or who have done no diversification.

I learned about your blog through the eHow forums. You have a lot of inspiration advice, and I appreciate your slant about putting blinder son. I am a fan! Keep up the good work here 🙂

Thanks Felicia! I am more focused than ever and excited about the future. The news organizations aren’t happy unless the world is on fire. I stopped watching them years ago!

Here Here Mandy. Now I’d better put my blinders back on. I am beginning to use this blog to help get me back on the right path when I feel like I’m wandering toward the clover (or nettles, or whatever).

    Thanks, Felicia!!

Sometimes it feels like my typical day is wake up, ingest coffee, open laptop, work, shower while planning the next article or website, ingest coffee, go to my day job, check articles and websites through the day, leave corporate box, go home, insert caffeine IV drip, eat while writing, write all night, sleep 5 hours, repeat…all in the hopes of being able to say goodbye to the cubicle. Thank you letting me know that I’m not the only one and the encouragement to know that if I maintain the “blinders” just a little longer, it just might be possible.

I hadn’t seen this post until just now, after you linked to it in a comment made on the leechblock post. Anyway, this is what I’m trying to work on more than anything right now. I know I have the abilities and the knowledge, but having the focus and making the effort to block out all the distractions, that is the final test.

With the constant deluge of bad news about the economy it’s easy to want to throw in the towel. Luckily I’m paying attention to that negative stuff less and focusing more on the positive. It’s having a pretty big positive impact.

Michael, your last statement is a testament that shows we get what we think about. You’re in the process of changing your focus and you’re already seeing positive results. Way to go.
