This is my 300th post and it should be profound…It’s not!

I knew the 300th post was coming up, but it caught me at a time where I’m feeling a little singed around the edges.

Although my November earnings were higher than my October earnings, my residual income was down by a little over $200; nothing to lose sleep about, but something to take into considering when relying on residual income. My upfront payments with Demand Studios made up the difference.

I find that writing for Demand Studios, is like having a job. I’ve got to admit that this time around, the writing experience is a lot better than what I’ve experienced in the past. It seems like they listened to the writers’ complaints and took steps to make things better. Better writing experience or not, it still feels like a job.

Singe Out (Not Burn Out)

I think the approaching holidays along with the desire to spend most of my time away from the computer has led to a little singe out. It started just before Thanksgiving. It’s not that I’ve got writer’s block and have nothing to write about, I just don’t feel like writing.

So, if my posts here are a little sparse over the next couple of weeks, it’s not because I’ve abandoned my blog or online writing career, it’s just that I’m feeling the need to spend more time doing things that don’t require reading glasses (I’d really like to get the guest bedroom painted before Christmas).

Oh, BTW, if you haven’t signed up for Xomba, give it a shot. I’ve found that posting one or two Xomblurbs in the morning while drinking my coffee tolerable during my singe out. The earnings are also beginning to trickle in at a steadier pace.

Grandma, I think you’ll get a kick out of this post. Just recently you made a comment about your frustration with folks who steal content.

Being new to Xomba, I decided to set a daily schedule of adding Xomblurbs/Xombytes. It seems that the successful Xombies (??) are those who post new content on a regular schedule. Wanting to become successful, I decided to do what successful people do.

Things were moving along swimmingly until I went to click “Submit” for one of my Xomblurbs and got logged out of my account. Thinking it was a computer glitch, I tried to log back in only to be met with a notification that my account either was not yet activated or blocked.

What??!! I knew I had activated the account so the only other alternative was that my account was blocked. Not knowing why I immediately sent an email to the Xomba team using their “Contact Us” link.

While waiting for a response, I looked over my Xomblurbs to make sure that I didn’t violate any of their terms. For the life of me I couldn’t figure out what I did wrong. All I was doing was linking to my previously written articles and/or blog posts. There were a few links to news articles and TV videos, but nothing that would be considered a violation of their terms.

The Long Awaited Response (actually they responded rather quickly)

Here’s the response that I received from Xomba:

Your account was blocked because we have found a lot of your content to be copied from official website. Law websites such as “(website link removed because I’m in the process of dealing with these plagiarists)” and others as well.

WTD??!! (In our house we say WTD instead of the more popular WTF. WTD stands for “What the Dude?!” Don’t ask, it’s a long story.)

I sat there with my mouth open for a moment. I was down right angry when I saw that response. Accusing me of copying from another site? My integrity was being questioned. What a royal slap in the face!

So, without thinking, I responded as follows:

That is not true. Each of the articles I posted today I wrote.

My name is Felicia A. Williams and if you look on Suite 101 I am the insurance Feature Writer.

I did not plagiarize any of the information. I was promoting my own articles. Is that against the terms?

Without waiting for a response, I stewed a little more and wrote:

Please go through my Xomblurbs. There is not a single link to the website you mentioned.

I’m very upset at being falsely accused of plagiarism.

You must be confusing my account with someone else.

All of the Xomblurbs I linked to today and most of them on the past few days were my own works at Suite 101 and eHow. Additionally I have links to my own blogs.

There are a few links to Fancast and some news items but most of my links are my own work.

Felicia Williams

To which Xomba replied:

I am not questioning your links. What was copied was your summary before your links. These summaries have the exact same content as the website links that I have sent you. All summaries must be completely in your own words.

And then I wrote:

They are my words. I wrote the article in 2007. If you look at the other site they copied it in 2008.

I have almost 200 articles on Suite 101. They are high quality articles and unfortunately unscrupulous people plagiarize them. I feel I’m being punished for writing quality work.

Are you saying that I cannot use my own summaries in the Xomblurbs? If I write an article and then promote it on Xomba, do I have to then re-write my own words?

Xomba’s response:

No no…we found your summaries on other websites. We just wanted to get your attention and let you know that this is not allowed. All of your words need to be your own. If they are…believe you but we needed to show you where we are finding your words and if you are coping them…please refrain from it. That’s all.

Sorry for the inconvenience and I hope that you understand what happened.

Those Darned Plagiarists

Man oh man! I was both outraged and thankful. I’m outraged because plagiarists are causing honest folks to have to prove they are honest. On the other hand, I’m thankful that Xomba is a reputable site that does not accept plagiarism and have pointed me in the direction of thieves who are plagiarizing my material. What really ticks me off is that the first site Xomba linked to is an attorney’s site. My goodness, you would think that an attorney would know better!

Now I’ve got to go through the process of issuing cease and desist letters. Will it work? I don’t know, but I can’t let them get away with it. Oh well, something else on my “To Do” list to get done.

P.S. Xomba reinstated my account so I’m no longer blocked.

A couple of weeks ago I signed up to write for social bookmarking site Xomba. I had run across Xomba before and had been approached by other folks to sign up but chose to pass on the opportunity after visiting the site. At that time the site looked very spammy and I didn’t want to be associated with it.

My View of Xomba Changed

After reading DeAnna’s blog post on Xomba, I decided to give it a try. DeAnna did a good job of reviewing the site. You should check out her post.

I also read a few of Kidgas’ post on Xomba. By the way, congrats Kidgas for becoming Xomba’s Money & Investing Feature Writer.

My Take on Xomba So Far

Xomba has quite a few tutorials on how to post Xomblurbs and Xombytes. They also give basic sound advice on how to earn consistent money with Xomba. In their Setting Goals section in their Beginners Tutorial, they mention that consistent regular posting is the way to go. They give a very doable initial goal of posting a combination of 3 to 5 Xomblurbs/Xombytes for a period of at least 3 months to see some results.

From viewing the profiles of a few of the successful Xomba users, the ratio of Xomblurbs to Xombytes leans heavily towards Xomblurbs. Xomblurbs require linking to an interesting article and writing a minimum of 50 word intro on the article. 50 words is easy, as a matter of fact, this paragraph is 65 words (It’s a great way to create backlinks to your own articles).

Xombytes are member-written articles that must contain a minimum of 150 words. How easy is that? Keep in mind; however, as with everything on the internet, quality earns more consistent income than crappy quantity.

How Much Can You Earn?

It’s up to you. Some folks are earning in excess of $1,000 a month. One stunned Xomba member earned over $680 in one day. Apparently AOL had linked to his article for particular keywords for the day and he made a record of $680. Unfortunately, the next day the ride was over, but $680 is still $680!

Referrals

Xomba has a referral program. For every person signed up under your account you earn 10% of their income. The 10% does not come from the person referred; it comes from Xomba’s cut of the income. Therefore you get 10%, the referral gets 50% and Xomba gets 40%.

Google AdSense Account

Before you sign up, you need to have a Google AdSense account to earn money with Xomba. They split the revenue share 50/50. Since the money is paid directly from Google AdSense, Xomba is an open opportunity to international writers. Once you have an AdSense account all you need to do is sign up and begin posting.
