The Money or The Muse: Finding the Right Keywords for Your Website

©Felicia A. Williams

KeyAny webmaster worth her salt knows that part of developing a profitable website is to find the right keywords on which to build the site around. But just how far should you go? Do you sacrifice the muse for money or visa versa?

For those of you who are not familiar with what keywords are, keywords are words that people use to find what they're looking for when they perform a search using internet search engines. The search engines compile search terms and the terms are used to determine which ones are most commonly used. Webmasters and internet advertisers alike find this information useful. It helps advertisers to determine how users are finding their products, and it helps webmasters decide which keywords to use to attract visitors and advertising money to their site.

Not all keywords are the same

Some keywords are used more frequently than others, just like advertisers are willing to pay more for some keywords than others. For example, keywords in the business sector are usually higher paying than keywords in the social sector. Advertisers will pay more for the search term "homeowners insurance" than they will for "internet jokes".

As a result of the financial rewards the competition for some keywords is tougher than for others. More and more websites are created for the higher paying keywords in an attempt to get a piece of the financial pie. Therefore, building a successful website with the higher paying keywords may not reap immediate rewards as there are older more established websites competing for the same search terms. Key

That is not a reason to abandon the use of higher paying keywords, it's just that you should to be realistic and know that there's stiff competition.

Here are a few keyword tools to help you find the right keywords:

The Money or the Muse

When you're looking to make money on the internet with your website, you've got to remember two things:

  1. It doesn't happen over night
  2. You've got to love what you do

If you're going to build a website around keywords because they're high paying and hate the topic, will you stick with it?

On the other hand, writing about what you love may be artistically rewarding, but it may not be the right topic to put food on the table. Muse

It doesn't have to be all or nothing. You can make money on the internet and satisfy your inner muse. All you have to do is find your niche.

Analysis Paralysis:

Don't fall prey to analysis paralysis especially if you're starting out. Even if your first few articles don't hit home runs as far as traffic is concerned, you can always tweak them once you get more familiar with the internet writing process.

It's great to get the right keywords right off the bat, but if you don't who cares. Just get out there and get started. Don't over analyze. Get moving.
