Double Your Writing Productivity with Dragon Naturally Speaking

Dragon Naturally Speaking voice recognition software is one of the freelance writer’s best friends. The other best friend is a digital voice recorder. These two tools are not required to become a successful freelance writer, but they sure do make it easier.

Since there seems to be a strong direct correlation between the amount a freelance writer writes and the amount of money earned, it makes sense to utilize any tool necessary (within reason) that will help to increase writing productivity. Dragon NaturallySpeaking is one of these tools.

Brain Flow

As a freelance writer, getting into the flow is important. Have you ever been in the flow where the ideas are coming fast and furiously and you can’t seem to get them down on paper fast enough? The average individual speaks at a rate of about 160 words a minute. Can you write that fast? Can you type that fast?

The mere transition of your thoughts from your brain to paper can be the reason why some of your ideas are not fully explored. Or, if they are explored, it may take a few days to get all of the ideas down on paper. Your hands (whether typing or writing) become a bottleneck for your free flowing ideas.

Speech, on the other hand, doesn’t have such constraints. Imagine how much more you would be able to accomplish if you could speak your words and they were written down as you speak. No hand cramps, no slowing down your brain for your hands to catch up.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking voice recognition software has made it possible for writers to allow the brain to flow and to capture every thought on paper. As long as you can speak it, you can see it on paper.

Training Process

There is a training process that has to occur for everything to flow smoothly. You have to train the way in which you speak and you have to train the software to recognize your speech pattern, inflections and writing style.

When using voice recognition software such as Dragon NaturallySpeaking, you have to tell the software where to put the punctuation such as periods, commas, new paragraphs, etc. Once you get used to speaking with punctuations, it’s all up hill from there (be mindful however, once you get into the flow you might find yourself using punctuations when talking to humans).

Try it for yourself

Although there are several voice recognition software packages on the market, I’ve found Dragon NaturallySpeaking to be the one that works best for me. Try their demo to see if investing in the software will pay for itself in increased productivity (and income) in the long run.

Thanks for referring me to this article, Felecia. It was very helpful! I’m a fast typist by nature because this skill helped me to make a decent living for many years (another long story). However, I can see how free flowing my ideas through the software can be a productive means of increasing my income. It occurs to me that I have a mini version of the program already installed on my iPod Touch. I’ll explore both that and the demo that you linked.

Will report back on my findings later.
